Pressure Washer Uses and Precautions
One of the most important tools that many car washes use in their day to day business are pressure washers. These machines are used to make it easier for manual car washes to clean off dirt from cars without having to scrub it down with a sponge. However, other than its use in car washes, pressure washers and its pressure washer hose are also used for a number of things.
Use of Pressure Washers
A pressure washer is a mechanical sprayer that uses high-pressure water to clean and remove mold, grime, dust, mud, and dirt from surfaces and objects such as buildings, vehicles, and concrete road surfaces. Part of its equipment includes a pressure washer hose which is designed specifically to fit on the nozzle as well as endure the high-pressurized water that these machines produce.
In its extreme high pressure form, water is used in many industrial cleaning applications requiring the removal of surface layers as well as dust-free cutting of some metals and concrete.
For exterior applications, gas or propane powered pressure washers provide enhanced mobility not available in electric models, as they do not require use in proximity to an electrical outlet.
For indoor applications, electric pressure washers produce no exhaust and are much quieter than their gas or propane powered counterparts.
Precautions in using a Pressure Washer
There are, however, several precautions in using a pressure washer. According to many experienced users, the pump does not draw more water from the pipe to which the washer is connected than that source can provide.
Because of that, the water supply must be adequate for a given machine to be connected to it. According to the, the flow must be equal or superior to that of the washer, so that the pump is never starved, which can damage the machine.
Other than the flow of the water, it is also important to practice caution in using higher powered pressure washers, such as those operating under 1200 bars (30,000psi) or more. According to them, the water pressure near the nozzle, or the pressure washer hose, is said to be enough to strip flesh from bone.
Objects in the water supply can be ejected from the nozzle at great velocities. The cleaning process can propel objects from the surface being cleaned, also at great velocities. Pressure washers have a tendency to break up asphalt if aimed directly at it, due to high pressure water entering cracks and voids in the surface. Pressure washers INCREASE the pressure of the water entering the washer by means of a HIGH PRESSURE pump. Nothing that does not reach similar pressures will have the same effect.
(Pressure washers usually operate up to 1500 - 3000 PSI, up to 15 - 30 times Household water pressure.)
There are a few items that use compressed air to additionally pressurize the water, but they require a separate air compressor and a second hose and never reach really high pressure. (These can discharge at up to about 250 PSI, up to about 2 1/2 Times Household water pressure.)

This type of item DOES NOT increase the pressure coming into the device,
it merely maintains more of that pressure and hence has a somewhat increased force to the stream of water coming out of the tip, by simply reducing the size of the orifice (hole) at the end of the nozzle. (Household water pressure is usually under 100PSI.)

Keep in mind that when the orifice is smaller LESS water comes out per minute (or per hour) if you are at the same pressure, so with these devices if the water is doing the real washing it may take significantly longer to achieve the effect you want as well.
