How can I make a root cellar with what I have?

I am growing my own vegetable garden and want to be able to store foods for the winter months. I live in a valley, so the winters here are not only cold, but VERY wet. The house I live in does not have a basement, and the only other structure is an old shed in the backyard.

I know it's possible to make a root cellar from things as simple as an old refrigerator or ice box or even a large barrel, but I have only found one article on it online. What's an easy, fairly inexpensive way to make a root cellar? Is it possible to convert the above-ground shed into a place cool and moist enough for it?
Giving me links to sites that talk about root cellars "in general" doesn't answer my actual question. :-/
