How is it possible for a glass shower door to shatter on it's own?

I have a separate shower stall / tub. The partition is a half-wall between the tub and shower tall, and sitting on top of the half-wall is a glass wall. I'm not sure how, but the glass wall spontaneously shattered on it's own. It started with a loud popping sound, and within 20 minutes the entire glass was shattered.

Modern shower door glass is required by code to be tempered, so it will shatter into small (generally not sharp) pieces when damaged. Tempered glass is manufactured with a built-in amount of stress, but is actually quite strong - it takes a lot of force to break it.

My guess is that the glass sheet had a point of high stress applied to it - perhaps something in the holding frame pinched it hard. Or if the glass was installed in a 'frameless' setup, then one of the rubber washers that were supposed to isolate a bolthead from the glass was missing or damaged, so the direct metal-on-glass contact & force started a fracture point.
