Why haven't vending machine style gas pumps been invented?
You and I both know sometimes it's annoying to go inside and prepay, so why not make a gas pump that takes your cash right there that is vending machine style, spits out your change and everything.
The first self-service gas station I ever saw was Gasamat (there were several stations in Wyoming and Colorado in the 1960s and early 1970s). Their pumps were essentially vending machines - You had to buy tokens, which were denominated $1 and 50 cents, and when you put them in the machine, it dispensed that amount of gas. The drawback was they didn't give change, and that was back when 50 cents was nearly two gallons of gas.
ARCO stations in California have a machine at the pump that accepts cash. You still have to go inside to the cashier to get change.
Bottom line: It's been done.
