The basic concept of solenoid valve

I have a Whirlpool top loading washing machine, it won't empty the water out or spin.?
Machine fills & agitates ok but won't drain or spin. Do I have a solenoid fault ?

the lid switch could be bad...this will keep it from doing anything in spin model ..this is easily checked.....for an easy check ..unplug washer, remove wires from switch hook them together and tape then see if machine will drain and spin..if it does it is your choice wjether to buy new one...if it was not switch then pump is plugged up and needs to be checked...will not spin with water in tub....
