Heat Stress Kills Plants Grown Indoors With Grow Lights
We are all aware of the potential hazards that too much heat can bring to any indoor grow operation. Just like you or I, a plant needs a good temperature in able to grow and produce at its highest potential. A hot grow room can be a growers worst enemy because this heat will end up damaging plant foliage which will lead to stunted growth and lower harvests. Using a digital ballast (also called electronic ballast) is one easy way to help keep heat down in the growing area.
Higher temperatures must be avoided at all costs. The ideal temperature range is 72-76 degrees Fahrenheit. Anything above 85 degrees Fahrenheit is not recommended. Once above 85 degrees, plant growth drastically slows or even stops. The hotter the air, the more water the air can hold as well. This increased humidity often restrains plant functions and decelerates growth. The best remedy is to have your grow room in a basement where the temperature is maintained a bit lower by our loving mother earth. Another very quick and easy way to help manage the heat in your grow room is to use a digital ballast.
Digital ballasts are proven to run much cooler than traditional magnetic ballasts. A digital ballast doesn't contain the typical transformers, capacitors, or ignitors which contribute to the higher heat of a magnetic ballast. Instead, these electronic ballasts use electronic circuitry (what a coincidence) to accomplish the same thing that these other components do, but more efficiently, quieter, and by using less energy.
So for a few more bucks, you can grab one of these digital ballasts and in turn give yourself energy savings, space savings, and of course less heat emissions. Heat can kill a crop, so do everything you can to minimize potential heat sources to ensure a bountiful harvest.

Is a faint gas smell OK from my gas range?
I have an older gas range which is original to my 1969 home I just moved into. I have had about 3 repair people out here to check out the range; the ignitor has been replaced and adjusted. I was told the oven was in great condition for its age and that a faint gas smell was normal and OK for a range of this age.
Is that true? Every time I bake something it just worries me having that smell in my kitchen. It's not really strong, but I can definitely smell it and it lasts for a few minutes, then fades.

The gas company has come out and confirmed there are no leaks. They used a wand to make sure it was safe.
Also this ONLY happens right when I turn the oven on, not when the oven is off. It lasts for a few minutes as the oven warms up, then it's gone.
YES, it is TRUE that slight Natural Gas odor IS NORMAL under the circumstances you describe. The discussion which follows should allow you and others to understand how this can occur.
Natural gas [Methane, CH4] has NO ODOR, and the gas companies by order of safety laws are REQUIRED to ADD an ODORANT.
That Sulphur-like odor is the result of the odorant [one or more compounds of a family of synthetic chemicals (Ethyl Mercaptans) which are based on what causes the odor of Onion and it's related plants].
During combustion [burning] of the Natural Gas, some of the components of these compounds are not totally burned and thus the combustion gas from the flame still contains some of that odorant.
Also, you mention that it only occurs during "start-up," and goes away once the oven is warmed up [the burner and flame temps get up to normal operating levels] which also contributes to incomplete combustion of the odorant until the flame is "up to normal" operating temperature. Once the burner and flame are at full normal temperature, the odorant is combusted, destroyed, and the odor goes away.
Since your system has been checked, and given a "clean bill of health" by both the gas range technician, AND the gas company technician, it is my opinion that ALL IS NORMAL, AND you have nothing to be concerned about.
