Heat Element
My hot water no longer gets hot! do i need to purchase a new water heater or can i just buy a heat element.?
also do i have to drain the tank also it’s a 40 gallon RUUD. Also is it difficult to install a heat element?
Assuming it is electric from your question, first check the breaker in the panel box to see that it hasn’t tripped or the breaker is faulty. Next step would be to check the element itself with a circuit tester to see if it is working or not. A 40 gal should have 2 elements. If the fault lies in the element, then changing the bad one is the cheapest solution.
To change the element, turn off the electric power to the heater at the power box and drain the tank. There should be 3 wires connected at the element. Make note of how they are attached so they can be reattached in the same manner to the new element. Depending on the type of element. there will be either 3 or 4 screws holding it in place. Remove these, slip the element out of the heater and insert the new one in it’s place and secure with the screws. Now attach the wires as they were on the old element. Refill tank with water, checking for leaks. After tank is full, turn power back on.
If you can do the above element change, it will be a lot cheaper than replacing the water heater.
