Its supposed to, if the flame stayed on the entire time you would burn your stuff inside. the gas is hooked to a thermostat which keeps it at a certain temperature, But if the flame goes on and off quickly then you have a bad thermostat and should get it replaced. also check your exhaust hose and check for blockage, a clean dryer on the inside will last forever. you should clean the lint trap every time you use the dryer or it will build up inside the dryer and cause you problems.
