Steam Washer Buying Guide
Steam used in washing machines is a match made in cleaning heaven. Steam helps in washers by keeping fabric soft and free of wrinkles. Depending on the make and model of washer you choose you may see different cycles that utilize the steam. In a prewash or soak setting the steam loosens up fabrics allowing the water and detergent to penetrate deeply. During the wash cycle the steam acts as additional heat to heat the water to a more effective cleaning temperature and also to dissolve the detergent more efficiently. In the post wash cycle the steam sterilizes the clothing and also softens it to prevent wrinkling. Some models offer a Steam Allergiene cycle that help sanitize clothing from dust mites and dander for people that have severe allergies. Steam does lengthen the cycles; however there is always the option to turn it off.
Besides the cleaning benefits of steam washers, there is also a benefit to the environment. Steam washers use less electricity and consume less water than conventional washing machines. A little quantity of water produces a lot of steam which heats water more efficiently and with less energy than normal washers.
Steam washing machines are not for everyone. However, if any of the features and benefits described above will benefit you and your family, a steam clothes washer may be worth considering for a modest additional expense.

What could be happening with a clothes washer where the clothes smell foul after they've been washed?
I do my brother's laundry while cleaning his house. He has a top loading, very nice washing machine. The clothes are washed with hot water and Cheer detergent.
I appreciate all the input. Hard to choose the best answer with so many helpful suggestions. And with all due respect, the clothes are immediately removed from the washer when the cycle is complete.
Make sure the inside rim is cleaned out, after a while bacteria can build up in there and cause the smell. If the machine has an automatic fabric softener dispenser down the center of the agitator, bacteria can also build up in there and smell. Check with your brother first, and read the owners manual to see how to take it apart and clean it. I had my husband help me with ours.
