Only one cabinet in our new house smells like mold. All the others are fine. What to do?
Its only one cabinet on the right side of the stove. When I open it distinctly smells like mold, yet I cant find any mold in there. I only keep meications in this closet but i still am worried about the smell. Any ideas on why it could be smelling, its an entirely wood kitchen cabinet and there is no area that seems like water was spilled in it. The house is not a brand new house though and its a fairly humid area. I thought about washing the inside out with bleach water but other than that Im baffled.
you would think that next to the stove that cabinet would be fairly dry. part of the problem could be that the inside of the cabinet gets fairly warm when you use your stove. since you indicated you keep medications in there, part of what you could be smelling is the combined odor of all those medicenes.
fyi..you know medicenes should be stored in a cool dry place cause heat breaks them down faster...
but anyway, you didnt say if the wall you were on had water lines running thru it, cause if you do, it could be possible that you have an internal leak. on the other hand if you dont have water in that wall its probable that the odor you are smelling are coming from the items you are storing in there.
first off, i would suggest that you empty the cabinet completely and store those items elsewhere for now. clean the inside thoroughly with a solution of lightly soapy bleach water and rinse well. ventilate well with a fan and let dry for 1-2 days. if you still have a moldy smell repeat the cleaning procedure.
as an alternative to bleach you could try using an ammonia solution or tsp (trisodiumphosphate).
